Ronald A. Westerhuis has won the Artist of the Year 2026 election. With this victory, he has secured the highest honour in the Dutch art world. The announcement took place on 7 November, which coincidentally was Westerhuis’s birthday – a symbolic moment the artist himself described as “the most beautiful gift imaginable”. The award will be presented on 15 November during the National Art Days in Gorinchem.

His work can be seen in museums, public spaces, and private collections worldwide. His philosophy Size does matter! (size is not decisive for the quality of a sculpture, but it is for its impact) results primarily in large-format works. The National MH17 Monument is also his creation. Ronald is the owner and founder of the Koelwaterhal in the former IJsselcentrale power plant in Zwolle.

Ronald A. Westerhuis heeft de verkiezing Kunstenaar van het Jaar 2026 gewonnen. Daarmee heeft hij de hoogste onderscheiding in de Nederlandse kunstwereld veroverd. 7 november was de bekendmaking, op Westerhuis’ verjaardag – een symbolisch moment dat de kunstenaar zelf “het mooiste cadeau denkbaar” noemde. Op 15 november wordt de prijs uitgereikt tijdens de nationale kunstdagen in Gorinchem .

Zijn werk is te zien in musea, openbare ruimtes en in privécollecties wereldwijd. Zijn visie Size does matter! (grootte is niet bepalend voor de kwaliteit van een sculptuur maar wel voor haar impact) resulteert in voornamelijk werken in groot formaat. Het Nationaal monument MH17 is ook van zijn hand. Ronald is eigenaar en initiator van de Koelwaterhal in de voormalige IJsselcentrale in Zwolle.
